A Unique People’s History Archive

Our archive is the result of more than 27 years of participatory research on the social and cultural history of Cardiff docklands and multi-ethnic Wales. It includes:

  • documentary, reportage and family photographs of old Cardiff Docklands;
  • portrait photographs – of people from ethnically-diverse backgrounds;
  • paintings of old Cardiff Docklands;
  • audio-taped interviews – more than 500 hours of life histories and life stories from local residents, most of them elderly and from immigrant and ethnic minority group backgrounds;
  • video-taped interviews – a collection of video recordings from the 1980s to the present;
  • televisionprogrammes – approximately 40 programmes, from the 1950s to the present, mostly from BBC Wales;
  • radioprogrammes – a small collection, mostly from the BBC;
  • official documents – such as passports, identity cards and seamen’s discharge books;

This archive makes it possible for us to produce exhibitions and educational materials that are grounded in local memory and experience. As much of this material was collected during the 1980s and 90s with analogue equipment, we are seeking to digitise the collection and make it fully accessible.
